Publisher’s description:
In the early years of Canberra's development, Old Parliament House was the geographic, social and political heart of the new Australian capital city. The construction and early life of this iconic building, from turning the first sod to the events and people of the mid-1930s, was captured by William Mildenhall, Information Officer for the Federal Capital Commission from 1926 - 1930.

Mildenhall's photographs provide a fascinating chronicle of the work involved in constructing the provisional Parliament House and also include images of stirring occasions and political personalities.

These photographs have been selected from the Mildenhall Collections at the National Archives of Australia and the National Library of Australia. They demonstrate the aesthetic quality of the building's architecture and the richness of its social history and human stories.
